யாராவது விளக்கம் தர இயலுமா?

யாராவது விளக்கம்
தர இயலுமா?

Disciples  are not following
the ideals of their masters

They become only idolaters
says Sarvapalli Radhakirishnnan

    to me
Sir, I can't type in Tamil, so I reply in English. Hope you don't mind.

You have raised the most fundamental problem in all philosophy, but you have also given the answer!
Man is a being operating on the basis of the mind, at the level of the mind. ( the very word 'man' is derived from 'mind' going back to its basic root 'manas'. )

Manas is designed to look outward, along with the five senses. It becomes the sixth sense ( 'Aararivaduve avatrodu manane' - Tholkappiam)

We perceive the world through the mind- it is the instrument of perception, analysis and also interpretation. Hence the mind is the root of all problems.

We try to solve the problem through the mind, which itself has created it in the first place. Ramana said this is like a thief himself turning policeman!

Einstein said that we cannot find solution to a problem at the level at which the problem occurs - we have to transcend that level.

All so called traditional religious or spiritual paths were designed by different saints/sages with the sole objective of tackling/contolling/silencing the mind. They appeal to different temperaments, are effective in different degrees.

The risk there is that many of these methods or exercises do tend to strengthen the mind and boost the ego which rides the mind. Hence Arunagirinatha cautions us against all such methods. ( see Alankaram---- 'Kaattil kurati piran padatte....')

It is Ramana Maharshi alone who has tackled this problem and solved it in one stroke. Since we perceive the world through the mind ( naam vulagam kaandalaal), we should first question the nature of the mind itself. We then experience that the mind itself dissolves and one as one is ie in his natural state ( vullapadi iruttal). This is not a mental exercise, intellectual formula or repetition of any mantra. it is just

It is just paying attention to one's own Self or inner being.
Ramana put it this way: pay attention to where the feeling or thought of "I" arises. Keep focussing on that . Ramana called it 'hrudayam' - not the physical heart, but the subtle inner feeling which we associate with the heart region, though it has no specific location. ( cf. Arunagirinatha says: " naan enru maar thattum Perumaley")

The traditional techniques aim at controlling the mind but is there a mind at all? What is its nature? Ramana offers a two stage solution:
    1. Enquire into the nature of the mind. We will see that it is only a bundle of thoughts.
( 'mandin vuruvai maravaadu vusaava, manamena ondrillai vundee para, margam ner yaarkkum idu vundee para; Ennangale manam )
The basic thought is the "I" thought. (Yaavinum naan enum enname moolam)
    2. At this stage, instead of continuing with the thought (as worldly people do) or trying to control it (as yogis do), we have to enquire: To whom does this thought come? The answer will be: To me. Then ask: Who are you? So, one will be led back to focus on Hrudayam or the source.
In this manner, the mind is totally ( but gradually, for us sadhaks , dissolved/bypassed /transcended ).
Ramana has explained it in the invocatory verse on Deeepa Darsana Tattvam:
It tanuve naan aam enum matiyai neekki
    BUDDHI IDAYATTE PORUNDHI AHANOKKAAL...
So the budddhi has to be fixed on hrudaya by inner attention.

Ramana has told us that there are two stages here:
    1. Mano layam : This is a silencing of the mind, or its suppression, rendering it inactive. This may extend to hundreds of years as claimed in the case of yogis, but will wil rise again (Layittu vulladu ezhum). this does not solve the problem but postpones it.
    2. Mano Naasam: complete destruction of the mind. But this destruction takes place automatically once we investigate the nature of the mind ( instead of investigating nature or world through mind as in science or philosophy) or instead of trying to suppress or control it as the yogis attempt. By investigation, we realise that there is no mind. Then what is there to destroy, except our wrong notion of mind and our identification with or reliance upon it?

Ramana has clearly said that in the end we have to give up everything we have acquired, even by way of (so called) knowledge. So why add to it? He used to say: granta is granti ie book ( (knowldge) itself is bondage!

Your piece itself contains all these thoughts. Your quotation from Dr.S.Radhakrishnan is very apt. So called disciples are only idolators or imitators. No genuine Saint or Sage has produced a real disciple ie one who just follows him as he did or is exactly like him.-- he has only made another Saint or Sage possible. Arunagirinatha, Pattinattar, Tayumanavar, Ramalinga Swami,Ramakrishna, Ramana- they all stand off, alone. But they have inspired many to attain that state, each in his own way. Most of them may be unknown to us.

In the case of Ramana (which is your question) , how can we people identify anyone who attained a state like him? It was Kanchi paramacharya who identified Ramana. Only some one like him can say that.

According to my limited knowledge, two persons attained a high state:
1 Mugavai Kanna Muruganar. After arriving at Arunachala in 1921, he did not leave it till his demise in 1973.All his works are in Sangattamizh, many patterned after Tevaram /
Tiruvachakam. Ramana Sannidhi Murai, Guru Vachaka Kovai, Ramana Jnana Bodham (10 volumes). One sample:
    Oonaana agandai ozhittagame
Taana olir tat para chit sorupam
    Monanubhavam kilar mutti arul
Kona valar sat guru taal panivaam.

    Enakkiraiya vullat tezhundaruli moha
    Mankkuraiyai maatriyolir maaniraivaam paadam.

  8. Thank you sir for your detailed analysis of the subject.

The realization of self is a secret phenomenon
which only known to the person who has attained that state.

It cannot be described by words.
Any amount of explanation cannot go near the truth.

Most of the religious heads are attached
to the theories of their founders and
busy keeping their flock together .and they
are not interested in clearing doubts patiently

only the great souls like ramana, seshadri swaamigal,
Trilinga swaamigal who attained that state
in their lifespan itself throw some light on these issues.

Most of their followers are busy in
    writing books and commentaries only.

    If you read such books
you will land yourself in confusion only.

Because all are like 5 blind man who has touched
one part of the body of an elephant and come to
different conclusions as they have not seen the elephant in full.

    my question is direct .
after the destruction of the mind only atma remains.
Will our journey ends with that or we have to travel further?

    1. Sir,

According to our real Jnanis, whose apta vakya alone is a sure guide, there is nothing beyond the destruction of the mind, when atma alone remains. Our entire Advaita tradition and all our Jnanis are UNANIMOUS on this point.

They do not discuss this state at all.Or attempt to describe it verbally. Arunagirinatha says: avvararivaar arikinrathalaal evva roruvark kisaivippatuvey. Tayumanavar gives a more telling example.

After reaching that state, their life does not nun on the basis of any idea, sankalpa, desire, etc.as there is no mind. Then how do they live in the world? They say the body follows its prarabda, they have nothing to do with it. Ramana gives the example of an electric fan which keeps running for some time even after it is switched off.

But those who follow other traditions indulge in lot of arguments which neither prove anything nor lead anywhere. We have nothing to do with them.

    2. Dear Mr Nanjappa

      Wonderful explanation
      I agree with you.
This is what I want .
      Thanks for your convincing reply.

Those who do not accept Advaitha philosophy
are inventing lakhs of imaginary stories and
fill the minds of their followers.
      in fantasy and imagination.

They also create lot of fears in their minds
regarding the non observance of endless karmas.

We worship .GOD for removal of fear of everything
      and fear about everything.
But some scholars interpret the truths
according to their likes and dislikes in many cases.

But Bagavaan Ramanaa's message is very clear
      and answer to the point.

He wants us to empty the mind to get salvation.

Where all these bookish preachers are daily
pumping lot of debris in the minds of the people.
about the history of past and dead people

      They never try to understand
      this message

What is the use of wasting time on these things by wasting the precious present moments without making efforts to realize the self within?

Sometime back I read the following
      information in a magazine

      once a devotee has put
      one question to.Swami Ramdass

Swami you have become a realized soul
after chanting Rama Nama crores of time.

      But why your chanting
      Rama Nama even now ?

      Swami replied. as follows.

A flowing river reached the ocean
and merged with it and lost its identity.

      But it still flows.
So also as long I live with this body in this earth
      I will chant the name.

      The difference is,before realisation
I was chanting the name with "I" that
I am chanting Rama Nama with the thought
that .I and Rama are separate entity

After realization the individual " I" is no more there.
      and hence enjoy chanting RamaNama
in a blissful state. and found that
      Rama has manifested as everything

  9. Dear Sri Pattabhi Raman,

Your writings are simply brilliant. After reading it, I am only reminded of what Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa once said about Hanuman:

“Oh Rama, initially I thought you are the whole and I am a part, then I thought you are the Master and I am your servant and gradually as I gained knowledge of reality, I found that you are I and I am You.”
